CUD History & Introduction
In 1985, Leo Yao, the chairman and CEO of Atech Totalsolution Co., LTD., invented the world's first serial flash memory. In 1993, he invented the first digital flash memory card Media Stick and its application on the first generation of digital audio recoder (Audio), Kodak's digital camera (Video) and HP's electronic dictionary (Data). In 1995, Media Stick was introduced in Data Show in Japan. Sony's then-CEO visited the booth with high-level managers to learn about the product, and later in 1997, Sony announced Memory Stick. Even though Media Stick didn't make it to the mainstream, Leo Yao wasn't dispirited. He continued to innovate, and in 1998, announced a world-patented multi-interface card UDisk.Because of its small size, large capacity, fast speed, high compatibility, good looking, robust structure, low cost, even though it isn't as widely adopted as Sony's Memory Stick or Panasonic's SD card, it has slowly gained acceptance in some portable devices such as MP3 player, digital camera and PDA. With the philosophy of continuing innovation and perfection, Leo Yao gathered talents in flash memory, I/O interface, ASIC and mechanical design and established Atech Totalsolution at the end of year 2000. In April 2003, Atech announced a new standard memory card that has the advantages of other cards while fixing their shortcomings. It is the CompactUDisk - CUD.







 

 

CUD is small, fast, compatible with CF card, has a built-in USB 2.0 interface that eliminates the need for card readers. It also has an open device interface that supports a new standard to be proposed by China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan industry. CF is currently the best-selling card mainly because it uses the standard IDE interface, but its fatal disadvantage of big size makes PDA/digital camera/cell phone manufacturers both love and hate it. SD card fills the gap with its only advantage - small size, but its slow speed and the proprietary protocol that is incompatible with other cards make it unfavorable among the engineers. CUD solves the shortcomings and covers all the advantages of other cards. It is compatible with CF card, only faster. Its size is smaller than SD card. It has a patented built-in USB 2.0 interface which eliminates the need for card readers and reduce the cost of usage to the lowest. What's more, the state-of-the-art high-precision connector design makes CUD even more competitive.


Eighteen years since 1985, Leo Yao tasted ups and downs, saw evanescence of worldly affairs, but he never complained or regretted insisting on his ideal. From the beginning to the end, he has always been determined to create and share with the world a digital audio-video transmission medium to keep his mission in life alive.

Taiwan is the OEM/ODM base for world-class IT companies. With the rising demand on the content of 3G cell phones, the growth of China market and the issues on licensing fees, Leo Yao sees the opportunity and the need to establish a new open standard that is compatible with the current mainstream. He dares not to say that CUD is the new standard. However, supported by 18 years of experience, integrated the advantages of other cards, CUD was born out of continuing improvement and innovation. CUD will open one of its interface to the industry for a new open standard.

China and Taiwan has been the follower of U.S. and Japan's titan IT makers for many years. Now the time has come for the Greater China to become the world's largest emerging market. CUD卡的歷史與簡介


八達創新科技負責人姚立和於1985年在矽谷開發世界第一片Serial Flash Memory,1993年首創數位快閃記憶卡Media Stick,應用在第一代數位錄音機(Audio)、柯達數位相機(Video)及HP電子字典(Data)上。1995年到日本推廣,在Data Show會場上,Sony總裁率領一級主管前來參觀深入瞭解,之後1997年推出Memory StickMedia Stick雖未能造成市場主流,姚立和並不氣餒,再接再勵,於1998年推出世界專利多介面記憶卡UDisk(郵遞卡)。由於其面積小、容量大、速度快、相容性高、外觀美、結構強、成本低之優點,雖然廠商接受度不及日本大廠Sony的Memory Stick及Panasonic 的SD卡,但數年來也逐漸應用在MP3、數位相機及PDA等手持裝置上。有鑑於精益求精、不斷創新之理念,姚立和於2000年底創立八達創新科技,集合Flash Memory、I/O介面、IC設計及機構人才埋頭苦幹,於2003年4月再度推出解決了其他記憶卡缺點而又涵蓋所有記憶卡優點的Compact UDisk(簡稱CUD)新標準記憶卡。

CUD卡的特點是體積最小,與CF卡相容,傳輸速率更快,支援USB2.0介面,不需讀卡機,更開放其中Device介面提供中國、台灣、日本、韓國產業共推一個傳輸標準。現今市場上主流卡是CF / SM / MMC / SD及MS卡,其中CF是目前銷售量最大的卡。主因是標準IDE介面,但卻有一項致命缺點就是體積太大,PDA / 數位相機 / 手機業者是又愛又遺憾。因此SD卡趁勢崛起,然而SD卡祗有一項優點就是體積小,但是工程師又都嫌它傳輸速率太慢,同時自訂的傳輸格式不相容於其他卡。如今CUD卡的出現,把以上缺點都解決,並且涵蓋了所有其他卡的優點,亦即與CF卡相容,但傳輸速率比CF更快,而體積卻比SD卡還小,同時內建USB2.0介面專利,不需讀卡機,將使用成本降至最低。另外,配合高精密又使用方便的Connector設計,更增加CUD卡的競爭力。

自1985年至今,18年來歷盡滄桑、備嚐冷暖,卻始終如一無怨無悔堅持理想與創意,姚立和立志要創造屬於世人共創並共享的影音及數據傳輸媒介,將那份執著的使命感藉著記憶卡傳承!

台灣是世界級資訊公司OEM / ODM基地,隨著3G手機Content之需求、大陸市場之興起以及授權金之困擾等因素,姚立和認為此刻有機會也有必要建立一個與過去主流相容而又開放業界共同使用的新標準。CUD卡不敢說就是所謂新標準,而是因為累積了18年的經驗,整合了世上所有卡的優缺點,不斷取捨改進與創新淬煉出今天的CUD卡,將提供一個開放界面給業界共推一個新標準傳輸格式。
